Koha Kai responding to the needs of tāngata whaikaha

Koha Kai is an innovative provider that is working to encourage a life of purpose for tāngata whaikaha in the Murihiku rohe.

It works alongside tāngata whaikaha and provides opportunities for them to connect and make new friends as they learn and develop skills through kai growing and catering projects.

Throughout COVID-19, Koha Kai joined forces with kaupapa Māori hauora providers, including Waihōpai Runaka, Awarua Whānau Services and Awarua Runaka. Through this collaboration, the team have put smiles on the faces of whānau whaikaha with their delicious kai packs. These have been distributed to kaumātua, tāngata whaikaha, tāngata whaiora and solo parents in rural areas across Murihiku.

Over the lockdown periods, 400 cooked meals were provided each day to some of Murihiku’s most vulnerable people. They also provided medicine and COVID-19 tests for households who were isolating.

Visit their Facebook page to watch an amazing video from Janice Lee, Pouarahi, who talks about why she set up Koha Kai and the difference it is making for tāngata whaikaha.
